Radish Harvest

On January 10th we went to Joyo in Yame to harvest the radishes together with the residents. At 10 am we arrived Joyo. At First the participants were gathering and a short welcome speech was hold by Otani-san. Afterwards we headed to the radish field. The harvest took about 1 hour after the harvest we went to a near stream to wash the radishes. While washing the radishes the residents set up a fire to warm everybody up. At 1 pm we prepared food for lunch. A part of the radishes which were freshly harvested were part of the lunch and were eaten together with omochi and oden. The radishes which were harvested on that day will be collected and prepared to make “tsukemono” (pickles) which is a traditional way of preservation in Japan. At 3 pm the activity was over and the groundwork members went to the firefly museum of Joyo for a meeting. At 6 pm we went back to Fukuoka.
